Gentle Gazzetta Readers, I’m writing you from a hotel room in the the city of Shenzhen. I’m here for the 2023 International Computer Music Conference, where I’m scheduled to give a performance and a keynote talk. Skewed Awakening This is my first time in China, and I came here without a geographical sense of the place or a clear understanding of the "one country, two systems" principle. So I was surprised, after landing at Hong Kong airport, that I needed to take a 40-minute taxi ride to the border and then go through passport control and customs all over again just to exit Hong Kong and take another car, for an hour, into Shenzhen. It was a long and arduous journey, but I’m excited to be here now, even if the most I’ll likely see of China during this trip is the campus of the Chinese Hong Kong University Shenzhen, where the conference is being held. Upon arrival, it became immediately apparent that many websites are blocked in China – including Google, YouTube, Instagram, and Wikipedia, which made me realize how much I rely on Google in my daily life. I was startled by how many times I felt the need to do a search just within my first hour of being here! Abundant Travels Since my last writing, I’ve enjoyed bountifully rich travels – including six weeks on the East Coast with a Tanglewood performance, a month-long residency at MoMA in New York, and a 10-day residency at MASS MoCA. Pamela Z, Kyle Bruckmann, Charlton Lee, Clara Kennedy, & Kjell Nordeson @MoMA	While at MoMA, I mounted my interdisciplinary work Simultaneous – finally completing the project I had started four years earlier during my truncated Rome Prize Fellowship year.
At MASS MoCA, I worked with Roomful of Teeth and the Living Earth Show on a new commission called This Impossible Building. We workshopped a version of the piece for a live audience in the concert hall there, and I’ll be delivering the completed work to them in the spring. Roomful of Teeth and The Living Earth Show, rehearsing PZ's This Impossible Building In the meantime, I’m keeping more than busy working on a number of new commissioned works for Kaleidoscope Chamber Orchestra, Zeitgeist, pianist Jenny Q Chai, cellist Nick Photinos, and Post:ballet.
Inhaling Art As inspiration for making these new pieces, I’ve been taking in a healthy dose of art at home and everywhere I go. I scarcely had time to see any exhibitions at MoMA or at MASS MoCA this summer, as I was working so relentlessly while there. But I did manage to grab some quick looks while speed-walking through the galleries on my way to and from rehearsals. And I attended a concert of works by Nico Muhly at Tanglewood, and saw a mesmerizing Orpheus Chamber Orchestra concert with Vijay Iyer, Linda Oh, and Tyshawn Sorey in New York.
The Melon Staino Box Trio at Skronkathon	Then, upon returning home, I attended many Bay Area new music events including Fred Frith and Heike Liss Drawing Sound at the Exploratorium and several delightful concerts at sfSound’s Mosswood Sound Series. The Annual Skronkathon Fest was a highlight.
I also saw Mason Bates' Steve Jobs piece at the SF Opera, and an arresting John Adams work at Davies Symphony Hall. And, as part of the SFEMF Steering Committee, I helped to curate and organize a vibrant 22nd Annual San Francisco Electronic Music Festival at The LAB that featured, among other gems, Chris Brown's Branches and re:VOLT's rendition of Morton Subotnick's Sidewinder. More Performing At Summer’s end, immediately following my six weeks back east, Christina McPhee and I mounted a performance of Carbon Song Cycle at The Exploratorium in San Francisco. And, through the fall, I’m continuing to give performances and have works performed and exhibited far and wide. Jo Kreiter’s Flyaway Productions is performing a dance work with music that Carla Kilstedt and I composed, the Berlin Sound Gallery ohrenhoch is presenting a sound installation of mine, and I’m heading for Italy to perform in a concert presented by the American Academy in Rome. Lift is the second work by Pamela Z presented at the Sound Gallery ohrenhoch. In 2012 ohrenhoch presented her work A Piece of Pi (world premiere) ohrenhoch Weichselstr. 49 Berlin-Neukölln, Germany top	Lift program note: You enter a small chamber; the doors seal behind you. When they open again, you find that your surroundings have changed. The change can be so complete and abrupt that it’s startling. An entirely different color scheme, a complete set of new sounds and aromas, the sudden presence of a person or people, or the sudden absence of anyone. The erection of an entirely new set of walls, or the replacement of existing walls with open air.  Or the change is very slight. The differences so subtle that they are barely noticeable. But, something is clearly different. At first, it’s just a feeling. But closer inspection reveals that a single word or character on a sign has changed. The temperature is a few degrees warmer or cooler. A quiet buzzing sound has become just a little louder. There’s a small chair or a wastebasket. The light level is a bit brighter. Someone you can’t see is whispering. There’s a faint chemical smell.
